The Extraordinary Music Workshop is a unique vocal workshop. It comprises more than 100 hours of classes in total: 70 hours in voice sections, nearly 40 hours of joint sessions, and the possibility of individual consultations. The programme also includes daily liturgical celebrations and creative evenings, among them live music, festive gatherings, and a guided tour of the Dominican friary and church.
Highlights of this year’s programme will include: a Tuesday service and concert in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary performed by the Schola Cantorum Minorum Chosoviensis, a dance evening led by Jacek Hałas on Wednesday in the friary garden, and a Saturday concert by Flores Rosarum & Ensemble Peregrina: Hildegard of Bingen’s Ordo Virtutum.
The classes will be led by professional musicians, composers and conductors, as well as enthusiasts of liturgical music with solid knowledge confirmed by years of practice: Piotr Pałka (Kraków), Urszula Rogala (Warsaw), Magdalena Głogowska (London), Paweł Kisiel (Kraków), Hubert Kowalski (Kraków), Rafał Maciejewski (Łódź), Katarzyna Młynarska (Opole), Tomasz Rojek OP (Kraków), Jakub Tomalak (Kalisz), Marcin Wasilewski-Kruk (Kraków), Sławomir Witkowski (Chorzów). The celebrations will be presided over by Tomasz Grabowski OP (Kraków).
During the workshop, participants will gain theoretical and practical knowledge of liturgical singing (including traditional singing). They will have the opportunity to learn the principles of music, the basics of reading notation, breathing techniques, voice production and the interpretation of pieces. Participants will also be able to attend lectures on liturgical music, sacred space, liturgical spirituality, the role of the cantor, and the tradition and history of sacred music. They will also get to know the oldest forms of prayer, especially the Liturgy of the Hours.
The workshop will take place at the Dominican Friary (12 Stolarska Street, Kraków) on 25–31 August 2014 (Monday to Sunday). It will be divided into two blocks: 25–28 August and 29–31 August. You can take part in the whole week or only in the block of your choice.
