On October 11-13, in the Dominican monastery in Krakow, we organized a mass singing workshop for the glory of Holy Mary, led by Marcel Pérès.
Although the Dominicans in recent decades have been well known among liturgical enthusiasts for their extensive polyphonic chants, the compositions practiced in these workshops had a unique feature: they were a three-voice arrangement of traditional Gregorian melodies from Graduale simplex. Moreover, Marcel Pérès, who conducted the workshops, composed them especially for our Foundation.
More than a dozen people took part in the three-day workshop. The pieces – for two male and one female voices – echoed in the Dominican Basilica during the “Fatima” Mass on October 13 at 5 p.m. In addition to the Latin polyphonic ordinarium for the masses, the faithful could listen to the monophonic song Salve Regina from the breviary prepared in Cyprus for the Canons of the Holy Sepulcher who settled there after 1291 (Chantilly, Musée Condé, ms. 1076).
The new Marian mass composed by Marcel Pérès fits into the skills of liturgical choirs performing songs from the Dominican songbooks “The Unconceived Trinity” vol. I and II, and it is hoped that it will be more popularized.
